HortInstitute was formed on 1 October 2003 and HortInstitute is a commercially focused Research Institute.
HortInstitute is a world-class fruit science company. We use our unique resources in fruit, plants and environmentally sustainable production systems to produce innovative fruit. We assist industry by developing innovative future plans.
We protect our new cultivars and products with Plant Variety Rights and patents and by controlling propagation and marketing through licensees.
Breeding with us
HortInstitute integrates traditional horticultural science with new genomic approaches for the sustainable delivery of fruit and fruit derived products and include:
- The fruit gene and compound data bases globally
- World leading fruit breeding and cultivar development
New Zealand's top five horticultural exports are kiwifruit, apples, wine, fresh vegetables and processed or frozen vegetables.
New Zealand horticultural products are exported to 105 countries around the world. Key export markets are the European Union, Japan, the USA and Australia.
